Lake Michigan Lighthouse Histories
Lighthouse Hours & Tour Dates

Lake Michigan lighthouse enthusiasts love Ludington Michigan for three reasons.

Big Sable Lighthouse in Ludington State Park, North Pier Light in Ludington, and Little Sable Point Lighthouse in the Silver Lake Dunes area south of Ludington.  It's especially nice that all three lighthouses are open, restored and accessible.  Click on the various hi-lighted links for more in depth information on each lighthouse.

Big Sable Lighthouse

Big Sable Lighthouse is located approximately 7.5 miles north of Ludington in Ludington State Park.  The walk to the lighthouse is about 1.5 miles along the beach or a no vehicle access road in Ludington State Park.  Visit Big Sable Point for the rich history of the lighthouse.  The lighthouse and keepers quarters are open to the public.  For those who may not be able to make the 1.5 mile walk to Big Sable, the Lighthouse Keepers Association, in cooperation with Ludington State Park, offers three dates when bus transportation is provided for visitors.  Bus transportation is available the third Saturday in July, August, and September.  The lighthouse is open May 1st through October 30th, every day from 10am - 6pm.

North Pier Light

The North Pier Light in Ludington is joined to the shoreline by a very wide walkway that extends approximately 1/2 mile out over Lake Michigan.  The North Pier Light is a favorite summer walking destination to view the sunset over Lake Michigan, for fishing off the pier or for the arrival of the Lake Michigan ferry S. S. Badger.  The lighthouse, also called the North Breakwater Light, has guided Lake Michigan ships since its completion in 1905.  The above link will provide you with the interesting history behind the Pier Light's construction.  The Light is open to the public May 1st to October 30th, daily 10am-6pm.

Little Sable Point

Little Sable Point Lighthouse is located a 1/2 hour south of Ludington in the Silver Lake Dunes area.  The crescent of water between Little Point Sable and Big Point Sable is one of the most dangerous on the Great Lakes and is the final resting place of many ships and sailors.  The easily accessible beach at the lighthouse is a favorite spot for beach goers and lighthouse lovers alike.  Little Sable Point is open to the public June, July and August, 10am - 6pm.
